What a horse clipping service does
Clipping removes winter coat so a horse in work can be ridden without overheating and dries off quickly afterwards. The clip pattern is chosen to match workload — from a light bib or trace clip through to a full clip for a horse in hard work.
When to book
The first clip usually comes as the winter coat sets in around October, with most horses clipped again through the winter as the coat regrows. Many owners stop clipping in late winter as the summer coat comes through.
What to check first
- Which clip patterns they offer and whether they will advise on the right one for your horse's workload and turnout routine.
- Blade hygiene and disinfection between horses, which matters for skin conditions such as ringworm.
- Their approach to a horse that is nervous of clippers, and whether they will work over more than one session rather than forcing it.
- That they will not sedate your horse themselves — sedation is a veterinary act and must be arranged through your vet.
Horse Clipping — common questions
When should I first clip my horse?
Usually as the winter coat comes through in autumn, once the horse is sweating in work and taking a long time to dry. Horses in regular work are then commonly clipped again through the winter as the coat regrows.
Can a clipper sedate my horse?
No. Sedation must be administered by a veterinary surgeon. If your horse cannot be clipped safely without sedation, arrange this with your vet and let the clipper know in advance so the visits can be coordinated.
Which clip does my horse need?
It depends on workload, turnout and rugging. Lighter clips such as a bib or trace clip suit horses in light work with plenty of turnout, while horses in hard work are often given a hunter or full clip. A good clipper will advise based on your routine.
