What a freelance rider does
Freelance riders school, exercise and produce horses for owners who are short of time, recovering from injury, or want professional input. The role ranges from steady hacking and fitness work through to competition schooling and producing a young horse.
When to book
Arrange regular slots ahead of a competition season, and allow a trial ride so you can see how the horse goes for them before committing to a schedule.
What to check first
- Public liability insurance covering riding third-party horses, and clarity on whether their cover or yours applies in an incident.
- Qualifications and competition record appropriate to the work — British Horse Society stage awards, UKCC coaching qualifications, or an affiliated record in your discipline.
- References from owners with horses at a similar level, and whether they are comfortable with your horse's specific quirks.
- Whether they will provide feedback after each ride, which is most of the value if you are not there to watch.
