What a horse physio does
Equine physiotherapists assess and treat musculoskeletal problems — restricted movement, asymmetry, muscle soreness and post-injury rehabilitation — using manual therapy, electrotherapies and prescribed exercise programmes. It is often the difference between managing a recurring issue and resolving it.
When to book
Book an assessment if performance changes, the horse feels uneven, or you are returning to work after injury or box rest. Many owners also schedule periodic checks during a competition season.
What to check first
- Registration with ACPAT (chartered physiotherapists who have qualified in human physiotherapy first) or with RAMP, the Register of Animal Musculoskeletal Practitioners.
- That they obtain veterinary consent before treating — under UK law, treatment of animals by musculoskeletal practitioners is carried out on veterinary referral or with veterinary permission.
- Whether they provide a written assessment and a home exercise programme, rather than treatment alone.
- Experience with your discipline and your specific problem, which varies far more than general qualification does.
Equine Physiotherapists — common questions
Do I need vet permission before a physio treats my horse?
Yes. Musculoskeletal treatment of animals in the UK is carried out on veterinary referral or with the vet's permission. A reputable physiotherapist will ask for this before treating and will be comfortable liaising with your vet.
What is the difference between ACPAT and RAMP registration?
ACPAT members are chartered physiotherapists who qualified in human physiotherapy and then undertook postgraduate animal training. RAMP is a cross-disciplinary register covering chartered physiotherapists, osteopaths and chiropractors who meet its standards for animal musculoskeletal practice. Both are meaningful markers of regulated practice.
How do I know if my horse needs physiotherapy?
Common triggers are a change in performance, uneven or shortened stride, difficulty on one rein, muscle asymmetry, or rehabilitation after injury or a period of box rest. If the change is sudden or severe, speak to your vet first.
