What a harrowing & rolling contractor does

Paddock harrowing and rolling are the core of grassland maintenance. Harrowing pulls out dead thatch, spreads droppings and aerates the sward; rolling firms the surface and pushes back stones and poaching damage after winter.

When to book

Spring is the main window, once the ground has dried enough to carry machinery but before grass growth takes off. Autumn harrowing after the grazing season is also common. Book early, as contractors are compressed into a short weather-dependent window.

What to check first

  1. That they work paddocks rather than only arable ground — horse paddocks are small, often awkward to access and need a lighter touch.
  2. Equipment suitability and access, including gateway width and whether they can work around field shelters and fencing.
  3. Their view on droppings: harrowing spreads them to break down, but on heavily stocked paddocks it can spread worm larvae, so timing and stocking density matter.
  4. Public liability insurance and whether they carry their own machinery or subcontract.

When should horse paddocks be harrowed and rolled?
Usually in spring, once the ground has dried enough to carry machinery but before the main flush of grass growth. Many yards also harrow in autumn at the end of the grazing season.
Does harrowing spread worms?
It can. Harrowing breaks up and spreads droppings, which exposes larvae to drying conditions in hot dry weather but can spread them across the paddock in mild damp conditions. Timing it for warm dry spells, and resting the paddock afterwards, is the usual advice.
