What a saddler does
Saddle fitters assess how a saddle sits on your horse's back and how it positions you as a rider, then adjust, reflock or replace it. A saddle that fitted perfectly last season may not fit now — horses change shape with age, workload, condition and muscle development.
When to book
A fit check every six to twelve months suits most horses, and sooner after a significant change in condition, workload or muscling, or if the horse becomes resistant, uneven or sore behind the saddle.
What to check first
- Society of Master Saddlers qualification — an SMS Qualified Saddle Fitter has completed assessed training in fitting specifically.
- Whether they assess the saddle both static and ridden, since a saddle can look correct on a stationary horse and still bridge or rock in work.
- Whether they can reflock and adjust on site, or only sell new saddles — the two are very different services.
- Whether they provide a written fitting report, which is useful evidence if you later sell the saddle or claim on insurance.

How often should a saddle be checked?
Typically every six to twelve months, and sooner if the horse changes shape, comes back into work, gains or loses condition, or starts objecting to being saddled or ridden.
What qualification should a saddle fitter have?
The Society of Master Saddlers Qualified Saddle Fitter award is the recognised UK qualification specific to fitting. Saddlery manufacture and repair are separate skills, so check the qualification matches the job you need doing.
Can a badly fitting saddle cause behavioural problems?
It commonly contributes. Bucking, napping, refusing to go forward, uneven contact and reluctance to be girthed can all have a saddle-fit component. It is worth ruling out with a fitter and a vet rather than treating it as training resistance.
