What a hedgecutting contractor does

Hedge cutting keeps field boundaries stockproof, safe and free of the overhanging growth and deadwood that comes down in winter gales. On horse property it also removes an often-overlooked risk: several common hedgerow plants are toxic to horses.

When to book

The main window is autumn and winter, after the nesting season restrictions lift and before spring growth. Book ahead, as the permitted window is narrow and contractors fill it quickly.

What to check first

  1. Awareness of the bird-nesting season restrictions — hedgerow cutting is generally avoided between 1 March and 31 August, and is restricted on most agricultural land during that period.
  2. That they will flag and remove toxic species in or near the hedge line, particularly ragwort, yew and sycamore seedlings.
  3. Equipment and finish, since a flail leaves a very different hedge from a trimmer, and repeated hard flailing thins a hedge over time.
  4. Arrangements for arisings — whether cuttings are removed or left, which matters because wilted clippings from some species are dangerous to grazing horses.

When can hedges be cut in the UK?
Cutting is generally carried out between September and the end of February. Hedgerow cutting is restricted during the bird-nesting season, broadly 1 March to 31 August, on most agricultural land — a contractor working on farmland should know the rules that apply to your holding.
Which hedgerow plants are dangerous to horses?
Yew is acutely toxic and ragwort is dangerous both growing and wilted. Sycamore seeds and seedlings are associated with atypical myopathy. Clippings are a particular risk because wilted material can be more palatable, so agree in advance whether arisings are being removed.
