What a horse dentist does
Equine dental technicians examine and rasp (float) a horse's teeth to correct the sharp enamel points and uneven wear that come from a lifetime of grinding forage. Poor dental balance shows up as quidding, weight loss, head-tossing or resistance to the bit long before an owner spots the teeth themselves.
When to book
Most healthy adult horses are checked at least once a year. Young horses losing caps, older horses, and any horse showing quidding, weight loss or bitting problems may need checking more often.
What to check first
- Membership of the British Association of Equine Dental Technicians (BAEDT), which requires passing the BEVA/BVDA examination.
- Which category of procedure they are permitted to carry out — routine rasping is widely done by qualified technicians, while more invasive work such as extractions is restricted to veterinary surgeons or technicians with additional qualification.
- Whether they work with a vet when sedation is needed, since sedation must be administered by a veterinary surgeon.
- Whether they provide a written dental chart or report after each visit, which makes changes over time far easier to track.

Do equine dentists need a qualification in the UK?
The most widely recognised route is membership of the British Association of Equine Dental Technicians, which requires passing the joint BEVA/BVDA examination. The law also restricts more invasive dental procedures to veterinary surgeons or suitably qualified technicians, so it is worth asking directly which procedures a technician can carry out.
How often should a horse's teeth be checked?
At least annually for most adult horses. Youngsters shedding caps, veterans, and horses showing signs of dental pain such as quidding or dropping weight often need more frequent checks.
Can an equine dental technician sedate my horse?
No. Sedation is a veterinary act and must be given by a veterinary surgeon. Many technicians work alongside a vet where a horse needs sedation to be treated safely.
