What a horse vet does
Equine vets provide routine preventative care — vaccination, dentistry, health checks — alongside diagnosis and treatment of illness and injury, lameness workups and emergency cover. For most owners the practice relationship matters as much as any single visit.
When to book
Routine vaccinations and health checks run to an annual cycle, with competition horses often on stricter influenza schedules set by their governing body. Register with a practice before you need one, not during an emergency.
What to check first
- Registration with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, which is a legal requirement to practise and is publicly checkable.
- Advanced Practitioner or Diplomate status in equine practice, where you need specialist input such as a complex lameness or surgery.
- How out-of-hours emergency cover is provided, and whether it is by the same practice or a shared rota — worth knowing before you need it at 2am.
- Whether they have the diagnostic equipment you may need on site, such as digital radiography, ultrasound or a scintigraphy referral route.
