When to book
Ground conditions govern the work — post driving is easier outside the wettest months, and most contractors are booked heavily through spring and summer. Plan replacement before winter rather than during it.
What to check first
- Genuine equestrian experience, not just agricultural — horses lean, crib, and go through fencing in ways stock do not.
- That they will not propose barbed wire for horse paddocks, which is widely regarded as unsuitable and a common cause of serious injury.
- Materials and treatment, including timber grade and post treatment, which determine whether the fence lasts five years or fifteen.

What is the safest fencing for horses?
Post and rail, with or without an electric line to stop leaning, is the usual choice for horse paddocks. Purpose-made stud fencing and correctly installed electric systems are also widely used. Barbed wire is generally considered unsuitable for horses because of the injury risk.
How long does horse fencing last?
It depends on timber grade, treatment and ground conditions. Well-specified, properly installed post and rail should last many years; under-specified timber or poorly set posts fail far sooner, which is why materials are worth asking about in detail.
