Before you book
What a horse groomer does
Equine grooms provide day-to-day horse care — mucking out, turnout, feeding, rugging, grooming and general yard work — either freelance on a regular basis or as holiday and event cover. For many owners a reliable groom is what makes horse ownership fit around a job.
When to book
Book holiday and Christmas cover early, as good freelance grooms are reserved months ahead. For regular help, allow a trial period so both sides can check the arrangement works.
What to check first
- Public liability insurance, which any self-employed groom working on someone else's yard should carry.
- Relevant qualifications or experience for the level of care needed, such as British Horse Society stage awards, and membership of the British Grooms Association.
- References from current or previous yards, and whether they have handled horses similar to yours in temperament and workload.
- Exactly which tasks are included, and what happens if your horse needs a vet while you are away — agree this in writing.

What insurance should a freelance groom have?
Public liability insurance as a minimum, covering injury or damage arising from their work. Many yards require proof of cover before allowing a freelance groom to work on site, so ask to see the certificate.
What should be agreed before a groom starts?
Put in writing the exact tasks covered, the days and times, rates and payment terms, and the procedure if your horse needs veterinary attention while you are away — including who authorises treatment and costs.
